Topic revist: Has conference expansion had a positive effect on college sports?

So a couple years ago we had a thread on here about whether or not conference expansion had been positive for collegiate sports. The majority of the responses were mixed and that it helped some and not others
So, now that we have had a few more years for these moves to breathe, has anyone's opinion over the insanity that was conference expansion in 2010 and 2011 changed in anyway?

Yes and no.
Yes in that it has given some schools better exposure
No as it has driven some of the traditions away (scheduling, rivalries) and it has made the non con weaker, as the schools aren't as willing to go play quality intersectional games as much. The basketball scheduling has been effected as well.
You will see more teams IMO buy out of these games and schedule FCS schools. FCS needs these games, but the "haves" are refusing to travel so some of the games we could have gotten are being bought out.

I've also thought it really screws over the smaller schools

The Big 12 sucks now, not sure if it's due to the Aggies and Mizzou leaving or if they just suck

Both of my takes are personal. I cannot speak for the wealth and well-being of conferences as i am not in those P&L meetings.
The 12 team SEC is what I grow up with and loved. It was all I ever knew. I miss playing UGA, UT, USC and UK with some regularity.
The SEC needs to go to pod-scheduling.
On the other hand, Houston has become more of a SEC town with the aggie addition. It is still a border town between the south and southwest.

WCA the interesting move will be in next few weeks with Valpo or Murray to the Valley
If Murray leaves the Ohio Valley, not a big deal as they can survive. But if Valpo goes to the Valley the Horizon becomes the AMCU again, a no history no nothing league.
To me the move I see is Valpo for name recognition, but both make sense. Both do not play football on a scholarship level, both are in the "footprint". For academics it is Valpo also. Drake, Bradley, Valpo, and Loyola give the Valley a good mix of Public and Private. Murray falls in line academically with UNI and what Wichita provided though.
ETA:
The AMCU had
Eastern Illinois
Cleveland St
UWGB
Valpo
UNI
SMS
UIC
Western Illinois
It was such a bad league only basketball got an automatic bid for NCAA Championships.

And this is coming from a fan of a team among one of the biggest winners of realignment

Conferences should be regional and have no more than 10 teams
Every conference should have a round robin regular season schedule
It's all about greed
Southwest Conference for fans was great. But it didn't make enough money.

They also need to line up academically.

Actually they did. The NCAA destroyed the conference more than Texas ever did. Yes it was Texas that whined and got SMU and Coog High in trouble, but all of the schools were major players at one time.
At the time of the break up
Baylor was winning
Tech had just won the conference
Rice had won the conference
Basketball you had TCU, A&M, Arkansas, Houston, and Baylor winning the conference within a decade
Baseball was Texas and Arkansas and the rest were garbage but improving

Negative effect.
Mizzou and Aggy don't fit in the SEC.
Utah and Colorado - nobody that's old school Pac-10 gives a shite that they are in the conference. They don't add...but they also don't detract from the reputation of the Pac-12.
SEC fans constantly argue that Mizzou and Aggy detract from the SEC's reputation because of geography. That's specious reasoning.

I really wish Houston wouldn't have blown their load this year and went undefeated, just to see what the committee would have done.
Last year was the AAC(or any G-5 for that matter) was as good as it will probably be for a few years and they beat OU and Lamer Jackson. No G-5 playoff contender is going to get that lucky with scheduling again. Had they run the table and not made the playoffs, the G-5 conference would have to do a lot of soul searching

Murray. FCS for football. 55 scholarships, not none.
