Any of you guys have a good VPN recommendation for use in China? I hear the Chinese government is blocking some VPN's and wonder if anyone has been recently that could recommend a good one to use?

I've been a number of times and their firewall bascially renders your computer useless. No Google, Netflix, most US websites are blocked. Going there soon and need some connectivity!

TIA!

IPVanish allows you to choose whichever country you want.

I had decent luck with Express on my phone. Cell data is really shitty though...like 128k. This was a little less than 2 years ago.

I honestly have very little experience with TOR, though I have read that the tor project particularly the "meek transports" apparently configure internet traffic to appear to be using port 443 and https websites, particularly places like amazon that would NOT be be blocked by the great firewall of china due to the economic importance of keeping these sites available.

google tor project meek pluggable transports if you find this option of interest.

What cell phone service were you using? I'm taking a T-Mobile phone and hope it picks up China roaming.

Buy a prepaid SIM card when you get there. If you are staying in a major city cell service is good.

I was on T-Mobile. Coverage was good. The speeds just sucked.

I mean, maybe I got used to it. I set up my Gmail to automatically forward to an old Yahoo account. Bing and Yahoo search work. I go through reddit for sports streaming links, and they work. You can still buy and rent on iTunes -- been watching Better Call Saul. I also use iMessage and FaceTime.

I recommend downloading WeChat. That is huge here. It is the best way to get in touch with people that you meet. (I also use it to pay for everything but you probably don't need that. Even street merchants have QR codes on their carts for wePay; I think that is so cool.)

Edit: I tested some more sites for you. These work--> CNN/Fox News, ESPN, USA Today, Wikipedia.

Which prepaid SIM did you use? China Mobile? Do you get data, text as well as phone service? Any idea on costs? Need it for about 6 weeks. Thanks

ExpressVPN will tunnel through. 30 day money back guarantee if it doesnt work. They have 90+ servers. Just choose whichever one you want. There are like 10 in the USA.
