Wait, so if you're given the option of a walk on or Malone to fill out your bench for one year, you're taking a walk on?

A. Wade is smarter than Jones so he will pick better players
B. Odo is better than Brian Landry
You're missing the point completely.

Not if he can't play. What good is having that kind of depth if the guys hurts you when he's in the game?
I understand taking a guy like Malone out of HS. You can't teach size and you hope you can develop him over the course of a 1-2 years. You don't take transfers just to fill out the bench. You want them to be able to provide an immediate impact because they are only going to be on your roster 1-2 years at most.
Carmouch and Coleman were taken to immediately jump in an play. Same with Hornsby and Victor (after they sat out their required time). Taking a transfer just to fill the 13th roster spot is how you end up with a guy like John Odo. He was a non-factor.
Recruiting is a funny game, not every player you get will work out. But not getting a player when you can will not work out 10/10...because you have no one to take those minutes if they are available.
Like I said, last season we basically wound up with 7 guys capable of playing just somewhat quality minutes. That's pretty bad. If we had just gotten a grad transfer or JUCO guy, again, a guy who at most will spend 1 or 2 years here, that COULD have possibly given us an 8th guy to give us minutes. That person could have been a John Odo, or he could have been a Carmouche/Coleman, etc...
Point is, there's no reason to really not fill out a roster, so you dont put yourself in situations like above. Lose a guy to injury, lose a guy to attitude, then suddenly because you got lazy and left guys like Bridgewater and ER III around, you have 7 guys really capable of playing for you...and your job is gone. There's SO MANY transfers out there, and even of the 1 year grad transfer variety (125 last year)...and also a JUCO. Just fill out the spot and give yourself a chance rather than just hoping for the best with an empty end of the bench.
Also, keep in mind, even the poorer players, like a Darcy Malone, is STILL better than a walk on. I'd take 1 year of him over pretty much any walk on minus Tuba recently.

With how poor our interior defense has been (really since Mickey left) I never understood why Jones didn't just tell Malone or Robinson to just make sure people don't score. Err on the side of fouling a guy. At least that would have spelled the few quality bigs we had. You could do the same with a John Odo count on him for 5 minutes per game. Tell him to play with energy and not let anyone score. Work with him gradually to teach him to play decent defense. The problem is none of that happened under Jones. I think it can happen with Wade.

I thought I'd help this thread get back to actually discussing Daryl Edwards.
Seems like he really enjoyed his visit! Good info.

thanks for the link. CWW and his new staff have me pumped for the future.

Antino Davis from Akron is the other one I was thinking of. He's a grad transfer, not JUCO.
It looks like we're recruiting Edwards as a PG as well.

Iowa state is a clue.
I was going to suggest this guy is a good get for murray state.
Can you imagine this guys reception at u of kentucky?
Oh gosh.
Bench guy at best at a top 20 program.

You mean the same Iowa State with six straight tourney appearances and two Big 12 tourney titles in the last three years?
Sounds like a pretty encouraging clue.

Who cares? We're not Kentucky, this would be a solid get for a lot teams including us

Sounds like you don't have a clue

In addition to sounding like he had a good time, Edwards also sounds like he's focused and serious about his game. He's worth taking on that basis alone.

I have no issue with evaluating the recruit and saying he's not good enough for LSU, but the Iowa State part is odd.
They have been an excellent program and much better than LSU for a long time.

There's almost no film available to us on edwards, so the only evaluation this guy did was see that he's an unranked (by 247) JUCO player. All we know is he shot 45% from three and averaged almost 4 assist and less than 2 turnovers a game.

No. 23 recruit in the country per JUCORecruiting.com.
I don't think 247 does a whole lot where JC basketball is concerned.
And if you have time, here's game film on him.
