re: Will LSU catcher Michael Papierski be drafted and, if so, how high?

Are not...

great high school numbers
Great high school numbers are hitting around .500 with double digit homeruns. Those are just good.

I think his lack of work ethic will stop his playing career early.
I had heard that he is one of the hardest workers on the team.
Is this not true?

I think that dude is talking out of his arse.

quote:The irony of his recruitment by LSU is that ptiching coach Alan Dunn really, really wanted Jake Latz to pitch for the Tigers. But Latz was a draft risk having been drafted in the 11th round by Toronto after his high school senior year.
Team captain who helped lead Lemont High to the 2014 3A Illinois State Championship ... batted .410 in 2014 with 12 doubles, eight homers, 42 runs, 30 RBI, 13 steals and a .543 on-base percentage
Sounds like Paul took a chance on him because he had the measurables and put up great high school numbers...
Latz was on the same high school team, Lemont HS in Lemont, Illinois, as Pap and the thinking was if we got Papierski, Latz's battery mate, to sign and come to campus, it would improve our chances of getting Latz on campus rather than him signing with Toronto.
It worked, Latz was the third highest drafted high school player who did not sign a pro contract in 2014.
Of course, we all know how it played out with Latz's career at LSU....

Both were signed with LSU well prior to the draft. We didn't all of a sudden recruit Papierski because Latz got drafted by the Blue Jays.
The risk was that they would both sign with the Blue Jays, as Pap was drafted by them just a few rounds later.

By signing Papierski along with Latz prior to the draft, the hope was to get Latz not to go pro after he was drafted.

Your post read as though we only recruited Pap to get Latz to not sign with Toronto. That's impossible as they were both in the barn before the draft.
You specifically said Toronto. Not MLB, or whatever team may draft him. That specificity makes it seem as if things happened in some different order than they did and for different reasons than they did.

Ty Ross went in the 12th round, but he had one productive season at the plate.
Ryan Jorgensen was taken in the 7th round, but he was so good defensively that he moved a pretty good in his own right Brad Cresse to the DH spot. He also was more productive at the plate.
Micah Gibbs went in the third round.
I would say given this data, he'd be between rounds 11-17, unless he picks it up from the plate to end the season.

He should stay and get his numbers up.
I'm not sure he can as he's been given opportunity and can't hit.
He does have a good arm, but his receiving skills are not great.
Before I get jumped on, I said receiving, not blocking.
There is hype, but I can't imagine a scout would go by hype.
It's stats right now and he does not have great ones.
If I had to guess I would say 12-14 round. A team will take a chance as he's a catcher and work on his hitting.
Catchers are a premium, but not if they cannot hit over .200 at the collegiate level.
He will be facing premium pitching daily in the minors.

I'm not sure you can say that LSU offering both was the strategy that worked given that the Blue Jays made the same gambit and they didn't sign with the organization.

quote:I don't know what you mean by 'in the barn' but if you mean they both signed LSU LOI's prior to the draft, I agree. I didn't say we recruited and signed Papierski only after Latz got drafted. But signing a LOI doesn't mean a player can't sign with the pros once he's drafted.

Since Dunn knew that Latz was going to be a high draft risk he also signed Papierski with Latz hoping it would encourage Latz not to sign with the pros once he was drafted.
Again, I'm not sure what you think your 'gotcha' moment is here but nothing you've posted refutes my first post about their recruitment by LSU.

Yes, at times he looks sloppy but overall he is one of the best defensive catchers in the country.
Is he really? He's probably top 3 in the SEC, but is he top 5 in the country? Top 10?

Mainieri even said at the time Toronto drafted both of them that the Blue Jays were copying LSU's plan to get Latz.
My point is after all of that "strategery" to get Latz, he was a bust due to injury and somewhat of a head case. And Papierski is still here....

By in the barn I do mean signed LOIs. Essentially the completion of the recruiting process prior the draft.
And I'm not trying to have a gotcha moment, or looking for an argument. Simply stating that the way you worded your post made it seem like we didn't recruit Pap until we though Latz might sign with the Blue Jays.
This is slightly different than the way you said it at first. And it's in line with what I was saying. That's all.

Unless he stops shitting the bed when they need a clutch hit, not very promising.
His defense is keeping him in the running.

Yeah... And Mainieri wanted Pap to start over Kade during Pap's freshman year

Me and family actually discussed this during tbe saturday game. Im intrigued to see where he goes. I could see it being anywhere from round 7 to about 20 depending on how much a scout falls in love with his potential

Hopefully, he will get drafted high enough for him to leave...this board will rejoice...
He came here with high expectations from the coaching staff, he just hasn't gotten it done offensively...defensively, he has lived up to those expectations...
