What's interesting is that Chicago Aviation Security had a slightly different take

Why is that the people who always get their arse beat by the police aren't doing what they're asked to do? I'm not defending the officer's actions. Just saying it could have been avoided. Just follow fricking directions from people in authority.

United is idiotic because there is no way to win this news cycle.
Absolutely nobody agrees with overbooking, and telling someone who paid for a flight ahead of time and planned around it that they're fricked because United wants to make sure they squeeze every cent out of available profit from the flight is dead on arrival.
The guy probably was belligerent, and he's probably a whiny a-hole, but nobody cares, because United is a horseshite airline in an industry everyone already hated.

United shouldn't have let the plane board in that situation. The events after that fall on the passenger and security as far as I'm concerned.

I get that they were following a standard protocol.
However, they should have been able to verify that the man was indeed a doctor and moved on to another random passenger. Granted, yes, he likely could get someone to cover for him one more day at the hospital. However, sometimes if they are very specialized they are needed ASAP.
Regardless asking "volunteers" to stay until 3 pm the following day is pretty unreasonable for most people that would have to take time off from work. $800 may not be worth the inconvenience of losing a vacation day or missing a business opportunity.
If they really want to squeeze employees onto full flights, they need to start with the first flight in the morning and keep going through each flight until they all get a ride. Waiting until the end of the day was bound to create an issue.

I would be fricking pissed if I was allowed to board a plane with a ticket that had an assigned seat then was asked to get off the plane.

both parties are wrong in the situation, United and other airlines need to quit overbooking so damn much. But I agree with United on this because the passenger took it to the next level. People like this guy are the reason I dislike flying, not the airlines. They feel like they are more important than everyone else.

I would be the exact same way. frick you and your credits, I didnt get my arse up to the airport to sleep in a seedy airport trap hotel and get your "max $100 per flight credits"
I took the credits from delta once. Wasn't worth it

Without arguing whether they are right or wrong, why do they continue to defend their actions? They've already been convicted in the court of public opinion so they need to just STFU and let the next outrage happen instead of keeping their name in the headlines.
