Most Americans, even the rich ones (and lots of the poor ones), think that they're in the middle class.
That doesn't mean they are.
if you're going to claim that the 87th percentile is middle class, then you're having a stupid argument with yourself. It's clearly upper class (top quintile! Nearly the top decile!), but you're unwilling to accept that because it makes your backwards policies easier to accept if they're "middle class".

It's really hard to argue two teachers with two kids are upper class. That is what we are talking about. You can say most of the state is lower class, but that doesn't change the wealth of this couple. They don't have enough buying power to be considered upper middle class.
