Slave Reparations from Georgetown University

This was discussed here last year when Georgetown made a public apology for having sold slaves in the 1800's to generate funds to keep the institution open. Many of the slaves, and now their descendants, are here in LA. Well now they have lawyered up.

Descendants of slaves sold by Georgetown University in 1838 have brought in a team of lawyers and experts to represent their interests as they push for more of a voice in how the school responds to revelations about the sale.

The group, which calls itself The Legacy of GU272 Alliance, comprises about 100 descendants of the 272 enslaved black people whom the prestigious, Washington, D.C.-based school sold at a time when it faced possible closure due to mounting debts.

So far the group has only pressured for more inclusion in the university’s discussions surrounding Georgetown's multi-tiered response to its recent admission of participation in the American slave trade.

But Carlton Waterhouse says his clients haven't ruled out a conversation about monetary compensation in their ongoing reparations negotiations with the university.
