I don't see why you guys bash on the original Netlix mail service.

It's the 2017 equivalent of, "I don't even own a TV."
Getting the DVDs is also a good option if you're into commentary tracks and DVD extras. Though I'm sure that's "Soooooo 2006" as well.

There is a distribution center where I live, and it was this way back when I had it up until around 2012ish.
Based on your post, I may give it a shot. Hell, the first month is free so there is no harm.
I just want it for new releases. Amazon charges $5/rental, but I can get a 1 at a time Netflix subscription for $8/month. If the turnaround time is still as you say it is, it should be worth it.

For new releases, you have to time that shite perfect or you'll be waiting. Before the barcode scanner, your returned DVD had to get to the facility on the release date. Now you might have to mail it back on the actual release date to trigger the next shipment.

I don't get many new releases, but it appears that they ship your next movie as soon as your previous DVD gets to their facility. They don't confirm that your DVD has been returned to them until later in the day, but they send out the shipping notice immediately upon getting the envelope in their facility. I guess that once they open the envelope and confirm that the DVD is in good condition, they mark it as being received.

This is probably similar to how Amazon returns work. As soon as UPS picks up the return, they have credited my account.
Probably has something to do with a barcode scan, as another poster said.

I just got back on the DVD/Blue Ray Plan after a 4 year hiatus.
The movie selection on the streaming plan pales in comparison to the selection for TV shows.
So, for about $9/month I can get new releases and obscure movies not found on the streaming service. The turnaround time has been 2 days for me, which could amount to 14 movies a month if I watched often enough. Seems worth it to me.

Mine has gotten slower. I used to mail one back on Wednesday and get a new one on Friday. Now it usually takes about four days. I live in Hattiesburg but most of mine come from Duluth, Ga.

Compared to their by-mail inventory, Netflix's streaming selection is minuscule. Virtually any movie is available by mail. Can't live without it.

They get scanned at the post office. They don't have to get to a distribution center to have the next one shipped.

It's all due to the licensing laws. On the streaming side, they have separate licensing agreements with the studios, and that limits content. The DVDs are just rentals, like any old mom and pop and don't require the same hoops to jump through on Netflix's end.
