Is your receiver compatible with Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio? If not, then optical is fine. Otherwise, you want to stay with ARC because the optical can't handle it.

just looked it up and it does, Dolby trueHD, ProLogic IIz and dts-HD master audio2.
perfect, that's the info i was looking for. i figured that one or the other, hdmi/optical, wouldn't carry certain codecs, and that's what i needed to know.

Aren't supported with ARC.
Plus ARC is very inconsistent and is different model to model. If 4K and TrueHD/Atmos/DTS HD is important you should probably just upgrade your AVR.
