Ok, but can you tell us what they do, why the break, and such? Thanks.

Why do mechanics insist on trying to charge customers (sometimes up to $100) to do a diagnostic reading on a car? A code reader is just a tool that a mechanic needs to do his job, and is less expensive than many other tools used by a mechanic. I don't understand why you want me to pay for something like this.

My 2010 f150 4x4 5.4 sputters when I get on the gas at around 20 mph. Sometimes when on the interstates around 70 mph it'll start shuddering, sometimes check engine light will flash. If I'm at a dead stop and lay on the gas hard it'll shudder bad and then take off and shift hard. Is it engine or tranny? I've heard 50/50 response

More than likely a bad o2 sensor.. tbh I've never seen a "check o2 sensor fuse" warning on a scanner ever.

If your truck has a two Piece driveshaft I would first take a look at the swing bearing in the middle of the two sections. Also could be a bad u joint or wheel hub bearing.
This is just an educated guess without knowing the year/make and model of your truck.

The boots that cover the bearings in the shaft ends get old and tear and all the grease comes out of them causing failure.
Also bad motor mounts could cause a misalignment in the shaft sections causing premature failure in the constant velocity bearings.

Took the wife's car to get an oil change. He tries to upsell me to castrol magnatec. I say no thank you, conventional oil please. He tells me that GM will now void your warranty if you use regular oil. bullshite?

Only way to void engine warranty is if you use an oil that is not equivalent to manufacturers specs.
If your vehicle is a 2011 or newer, your vehicle requires Dexos2 synthetic blend oil.
It's in the owners manual that's in your glove box.

There is a huge difference between a code reader and an actual scanner. My Snap on scanner costs $6500.
It shows way more than just a code.
A code is meant to direct you to the source of the problem but will not tell you directly what the problem is.
A scanned will read live real time data and will help in a mechanics venture for diagnosing an issue
