The US Navy is the largest deterrent to war. Roosevelt was a proponent of naval dominance/power projection and that doctrine still lives today. No nation will be able to challenge our navy within the next 50 or more years
Did you miss the pet about 2/3 of all naval aircraft being grounded?
Have you not heard they're actually having to canibilze retired museum aircraft because they can't get parts elsewhere?

I agree we don't spend money efficiently. I'd rather fix that problem than throw more money at it.

I hate to say good, but western Europe has to start shouldering some of the bills or they can defend themselves with all the more socialist programs they can afford because of our military might.

United States has too many economic interests to allow the Euros to defend themselves without American help. IMO, YMMV

National Defense is sort of the original intention of the federal government.

Well it's like the article about the 101st said. They deployed to combat and instead of taking their own maintence crews, the government instead brought in private contractors.
Tell me which option costs more
A. Private 1st class Joe Blow
Or
B. Private Contractor professional helicopter mechanic
Where is the logic in bringing in these private contractors while you leave your whole maintenance crew behind?

Great point. Let's talk about original intent.
We were never intended to have a large standing army in peace time. We were intended to maintain a powerful navy with militia during peace time.
The founders were concerned with us stationing troops all over the damn place and getting our noses where they don't belong.
Good thing that never happened

I think the issue is that we give the DoD too much money so they're not forced to make those logical decisions.

No, I didn't miss that part. My first post addresses that. The units are still combat capable. There's a lot of consolidation going on but that doesn't mean that they're falling apart. There's more than enough naval air units to maintain a strike fighter fleet at sea.
The navy will be bolstered when the 35s all come on-line. It's not so much of a deteriorating situation as it is a gap in between generations of aircraft. It's more severe at the reserve levels where the legacy hornets are having to be part mined to maintain capable aircraft. Units flying rhinos are having problems as well but not as bad. That's why the navy is/will likely order more rhinos to fill the gap between it and the 35.

Entire US Army unprepared for large scale war.
Admittedly I haven't read the thread you linked, but this is either grossly exaggerated or horrible mismanagement of funds and we need to start cleaning house at the top of the military, no?

I agree with you, I just think it's odd that people complain about how much is spent on Defense vs Entitlement programs that the government should have no business in.
There needs to be a much more focused effort on spending money more efficiently when it comes to defense, especially in procurement. Look at the F-35 and the Zumwalt-class destroyer and you can see we have a problem.
quote:
Prompted by the November 22, 2016, break-down of Zumwalt in the Panama Canal with both propellers seized, Mike Fredenburg analyzed the program for the National Review and concluded that the ship's problems "are emblematic of a defense procurement system that is rapidly losing its ability to meet our national security needs.
" After detailing problems relating to the skyrocketing costs, lack of accountability, unrealistic goals, a flawed concept of operations, the perils of designing a warship around stealth, as well as the failure of the Advanced Gun System, Fredenburg concludes:
The Zumwalt is an unmitigated disaster. Clearly it is not a good fit as a frontline warship. With its guns neutered, its role as a primary anti-submarine-warfare asset in question, its anti-air-warfare capabilities inferior to those of our current workhorse, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, and its stealth not nearly as advantageous as advertised, the Zumwalt seems to be a ship without a mission

Don't worry. We have this boated budgetary POS that nobody knows how to use to protect us.

Nearly every new weapon platform has been called a disaster at some point. Remember when the F-16's joystick didn't move? Remember when the Patriots didn't function perfectly?

I see this argument being made over and over. To those who subscribe to our military preparedness being fully connected to dollars spent, I'll two simple questions.
1. Where does the US rank in education spending in the world?
2. Where does the US rank in education in the world?
The point of those two questions is that just because our government is throwing mountains of money at something doesn't mean that something is working.

The Zumwalt is a disaster though, it has no role and the price of stealth far outweighs benefits over the arleigh-burke class destroyers.

I suspect that there's enough waste in the system that we could keep the budget the same and increase our capabilities by 30% if we made some simple changes.
