Your number one wasn't New Order - Power, Corruption & Lies. List is invalid.

I was going to participate in this thread, but if you consider

Gotta be some B-52s, Elvis Costello, Pretenders in there. The Producers. The Police. I'll think of some more.
ETA The Romantics, Squeeze, Modern English, Split Enz
I was big into it back then and saw lots of them at Jimmy's, Ole Man Rivers, and the riverboat President.
ETA again of course The Clash

I grew up and came of age during this era. From the artists mentioned, I apparently have no idea what constitutes "New Wave".

Joe Jackson - Night and Day. Look Sharp a few years earlier was more true new wave.

In no particular order -
Smiths - Meat is Murder/Queen is Dead
Talking heads - Stop making sense
The cult - love
New Order - Power Corruption/low life
Echo and the Bunnymen - ocean rain
XTC - English settlement
Jesus and Mary chain - psychocandy
Depeche Mode - music for the masses
The cure - head on the door/kiss me
Public image - this is what you want
Let's active - big plans for everybody
The the - soul mining/infected
Hoodoo gurus - mars needs guitars/Stone Age romeos
ETA: I may or may not have a good grasp of what y'all mean as "new wave". There some overlap between new wave and punk.

Now this is a solid list. Yeah, I cant' figure out who's Dark wave vs New Wave. IMO, U2, REM or INXS isn't new wave. When I think of New Wave I think British or New York area with crazy hair and wacky makeup or Avant-garde approach.
Since he said 1980, I'm just going to say Blondie - Eat to the Beat(1979) should top any New Wave list if you don't have Talking Heads-Stop making sense there.

I always liked Claude Bessy's take on the term New Wave:
I have excellent news for the world. There's no such thing as New Wave. It does not exist. It's a figment of a lame count's imagination. There was never any such thing as New Wave. It was the polite thing to say when you were trying to explain you were not into the boring old rock 'n roll but you didn't dare to say punk because you were afraid to get kicked out of the party and they wouldn't give you coke any more. There's New Music, there's New Underground Sound, there's Noise, there's Punk, there's Power Pop, there's Ska, there's Rockabilly, but New Wave doesn't mean shite.
And Romeo Void and Flock of Seagulls are the only two bands on the OP's list that would be considered "New Wave".
