Bunch of kids with power all wanting a piece of their tormentor and would be executor. Makes sense to me. Hell, given the set up, I wouldn't be surprised if they had one kid killing him solo, and the others running in after the fact because they wanted some too.
But that would have played too poorly on film, and Pierce needed something a little more than merely getting stabbed by Logan/X-23 like a hundred other guys.
I would argue Rice's death was worse. Barely developed character that gets his head blown off mid expositional monologue.
