I do
my boat was rated for 150 by the manufacturer
I called them and requested a new plate since a 175 is the exact same transom weight as a 150. They sent me a new plate and I got insured no problem
it's about transom weight not HP

That new plate idea is a good idea. Obviously it depends on what kind of accident you get into for needing insurance. If you back your truck into the water at the boat launch, I don't think HP will matter. But if you hit a wave going 75 and flip your boat, they probably gonna care.

This. ill also give an example. Xpress sells the h20b with a 115hp yamaha and a 115hp rated yellow plate. To get a 150 plate for the h20b all you need to do is add hydraulic steering and bam you are legal. Also they sell the H22B with the 150 with the same exact transom so sometimes its so a dealer can get a certain price point.
Go over to bass boat central and the Xpress board. They have lots of guys running X19s with 175 and 200 SHO motors. Not sure if they care about the coast guard plate though
