The U.S.-led coalition effort against Islamic State is killing the group's fighters more quickly than it can replace them, a senior British general said on Tuesday, with more than 45,000 killed by coalition air strikes up to August last year.
quote:
"We are killing Daesh at a rate that they simply can't sustain," said Major General Rupert Jones, deputy commander for the Combined Joint Task Force coalition, using an Arabic acronym for Islamic State. "The enemy cannot sustain the attrition that they are suffering and therefore they lose terrain, they lose battles."
quote:
The top American commander in Iraq said earlier this month he believed U.S.-backed forces would recapture Islamic State's two major strongholds - Raqqa in Syria and Mosul in Iraq - within the next six months. Jones said that while the battle would not be over with the fall of Mosul or Raqqa, it would be the beginning of the end. "The inevitability of their destruction just becomes really a matter of time," he said, adding that the group's leadership was now focused on little more than survival.

If this is accurate, then they should pour it on. double down. Whatever phrase you prefer. Boot on the throat and don't stop.

Yep, ISIS is fricked as far as being a state. They haven't been able to recruit at any sustainable rate for over a year--the border between Turkey and Syria has been closed to ISIS ever since the Kurds began recapturing Rojava with US support, and since Turkey and the FSA launched a new offensive into northern Aleppo governate from the Turkish border. The YPG/SDF controls Manbij and the FSA/TAF controls Al-Bab. Basically, no recruits could reach ISIS territory even if they wanted to.
The YPG/SDF is currently surrounding Raqqa--they are 5 km away in some places. The Iraqis are capturing the rest of Mosul now, though it will probably take another few months to finish. Now that the SAA controls all of Aleppo city, they have been pushing east toward Lake Assad. I think they've also reenergized their offensive toward Palmyra.
Things are going well against ISIS. The strategy we've been using is working, and I expect the Trump administration to stay on course. I will be interested to see how this administration handles the inevitable insurgency that ISIS becomes.

Are you under the impression that the boogeyman is real? Because, the murderous bastards that are ISIS are indeed real.

I'm weary of this.... I feel the closer and closer we get to raqqa or mosul, the more terror attacks and more extreme attacks might occur. Once they see the writing on the wall, who knows what they have in their back pocket.
Wish we could just glass over both cities. Irradiate the little frick boys

quote:That's pretty much what's happening. The Syrian Kurds are surrounding Raqqa, and the Iraqis are currently recapturing Mosul. After Mosul, I think the Iraqis will push along the Euphrates to Al-Qaim. After that, Iraq will pretty much be back under Iraqi control, besides the desolate desert areas.

edit: just read that the hills around Palmyra are now under SAA control and that the city should be recaptured very soon. Good news!
