Two things killed the Gamecube more than anything else I think. 1) small proprietary disk format 2) weird controller.

No one wants to play Tony Hawk on a Gamecube pad, and the limited storage space of a Gamecube disk often meant games had to be shipped on two disks or corners had to be cut with respect to audio, FMV, or graphics quality.

I really don't think lack of online play hurt it that much considering online play was never that big on the PS2. You also had games like Phantasy Star Online which was a reason for people to buy the console.

Considering this is during the day of Halo 2 on Xbox, I would say lack of online play hurt them in a bad way. Halo 2 carried Xbox Live to relevancy, and is one of the reasons Xbox and Xbox 360 (Halo 3) did some major work in the console war.

Of course, it's balanced out now between PS4 and XBONE. I can't remember for sure if PS4 has an advantage still in sales or not.

Either way, Nintendo has been the bottom feeder since.

The GameCube controller is in the debate for being the most well designed controller ever. And hell, it seems like with the Switch controller layout, all they did was put the Wiimote and GameCube controller in a blender. The controller is still being used to this day for a reason, despite being 3 generations old.
