Without a doubt buy yourself one or have multiple in the house if your kid/s have one. The last thing you are going to want is to be shot by your kids with no recourse.
I would take a cardboard box and tape a piece of paper over it as a target. You can shoot through the paper but the ammo stays in the box.

+1 for all the comments
My son used one alot from grade 7 into early HS than he grew out of it. Make sure they wear eye protection, get a few cool safety glasses for him and his buddies. That was rule number 1 w/ me if Ii see no safety glasses the gun goes away.
The other rule is don’t shoot it in the house or the dog etc (maybe the cat ....). I have a man cave in my basement (ya I know there are no basements in LA) and there are lots of “dimples” in the drywall from “errant” shots ...
Its pretty cheap entertainment, they get out side run around and shoot each other – better than call of duty all day and night.
The pellets don’t really hurt, that was one of the things I did was shoot myself w/ it just to see how much damage there could be.

It was always terrifying playing with my uncles bc they weren't scared to get hit. They would rush me and unload and it was so scary
