People Who Think The World Will End Soon

As far back as I can remember, there are people who always say "the world is coming to an end". They usually say it when something bad happens, but some people will go on about it as if they really think they will see the world come to an end.
Then there are events that people buy into. Like the turn of the century. So many people were convinced the world would end in 2000. Then there was the whole Mayan calendar thing. I still remember talking to some guy, who seemed like a level headed thinking guy.. One day this topic came up and he told us that he thinks it would happen and that he has been getting all of his things in order and preparing as if it would happen.
Does anyone here honestly believe the world will end soon?

The phrase "world will end" drives me up the wall. It makes no sense. Do you mean existence ends? Earth destroyed? Life on earth vanishing? People broadly say this and it has no meaning.

I never quite understood the logic behind "preparing" for the end of the world. If the planet dies, does it really matter how many MRE's or bottles of Dasani you have?
