Weeks at #1 mean little to nothing compared to actual Final AP poll results. Oh and there are ton of different SOS formulas (some would have LSU 6 others would have them much much lower). You can easily make the argument that Penn States Indy schedules in the 80s were far tougher than regular conference schedules could ever be

LSU's schedule during the late 80s was brutal.

'88
Week one was #10 Texas A&M, week 5 #4 Auburn (Earthquake game) both wins in Tiger Stadium.
In between those two top 10 matchups, LSU went to Tennessee, Ohio State, and Florida. They still had to go to Bama and State and had #2 Miami come into Tiger Stadium.

The following season LSU opened the season with two non conference games @A&M and Florida State.
