Worst Case Hypothetical Draft Scenario
Posted on 2/15/17 at 9:20 am

The Pelicans start winning a few games and are granted the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft
These players are already off the board:
Fultz
Smith Jr
Ball
J. Jackson
J. Isaac
J. Tatum
M. Monk
DeAaron Fox
Miles Bridges
With the 10th pick in the 2017 NBA draft, the New Orleans Pelicans select...?

Personally at that spot, I would take a flyer on Harry Giles- huge risk/reward or the France point guard Frank Ntilikina.
These would be worst case scenarios IMO. I can't see it getting any worse unless we do make a playoff run. I'm really hoping for pick 6 again but would settle with pick 8.

Frank Ntilikina or Lauri Markkanen
happy with either of these picks, the complete last person I want is Jonathan Issac

I want nothing to do with any foreign player in the top 10, especially one that isn't a big.
I want Josh Jackson.
Since in this scenario I can't have him, then i'd be fine with Giles or Bam if they want a big, and I wouldn't mind a reach for Dwayne Bacon from FSU.

Giles has the most potential. AD would have to agree to be the full time center though.

Giles would never work out with our medical staff. He's worst case scenario.

That is true. But that is why he a risk/reward type of player

They won't be picking for themselves, so it will all depend on who the team they are picking for wants

I don't think this is true if they "win the lottery" aka get a top 3 pick. Unless its for a legit star.
Anything less than top 3, yeah, Dell is going to do Dell things.

I would expect us to be picking in the 9-12 range.
2015
Kaminsky
Winslow
Myles Turner
Trey Lyles
2014
Vonley
Elfrid Peyton
McDermott
Saric
2013
Trey Burke
McCollum
MCW
Steven Adams
2012
Drummond
Rivers
Myers Leonard
Jeremy Lamb
2011
Kemba
Jimmer
Klay Thompson
Alex Burks
2010
Paul George
Gordon Hayward
Aldrich
the great Xavier Henry
the last three 13th picks have been
Devin Booker
Zach Levine
Kelly Olynyk
The 3 before them weren't anything
that's 30 players drafted in that range in the last 6 years.
4 of them are great (PG/Hayward/Klay/Drummond)
4 of them are pretty good starters (Lavine/Booker/McCollum/Kemba)
3 of them are really good role player bigs (Turner/Olynyk/Adams)
The rest aren't really game changers at all.
So with that pick, based on history of the last 6 years, you've got around a 35% chance at getting a good starter, with around the same decent chance that guy ends up being a perennial all star.
I think i'd rather the chance than trade it away.

Literally both of these are wrong, Giles has awful injury history with his knees, and he isn't even that good right now IMO
also, AD is shorter than Giles and more skilled from the outside, so he would not "have" to play center
Kristaps is 7'3" and starts PF, while they start a 6'11" center

We also had the pick for Alrdrich, which came right after George and Hayward, but we traded it away for two later picks, which turned out to be Brackins and QPon.
They guys that have gone right before we picked, back a few years ago when we were picking in this range have been perennial all stars, like PG/Hayward and Drummond. now we would have never taken AD and Drummond in the same draft, but in hindsight, that would have been nice, and then we would have never traded for Asik, giving up a first round pick too.
The bad luck of ours is that the top 10 picks in the 2 years after AD, when we were still picking in the top 10, were really shitty classes as far as top 10's go, really pretty much every top 10 class since AD/Beal/Lillard/Drummond/Barnes in 2012 has been pretty shitty.
Best player in 2013 top 10 is McCollum, at 10, then Otto Porter, who took 3 years to be good.
Best player in 2014 top 10 is Wiggins, the #1 pick, then I guess Marcus Smart since the rest of them either suck or are always hurt like Parker and Embiid. A lot of mediocrity in those two drafts in the top 10.
Seems like the better players have been going in the teens and the few gems in the early 2nd round lately.

The biggest upside/gamble have Ntilikina IMO.
But he is not NBA ready yet. So if Pels will stay with the pick, it will be better to stay with own 2018 pick. Cause he might go in both ways.
But agree. 2017 pick will be traded...

That proves my point. Giles can't play center because he will not be strong enough to go head to head with NBA centers day in and day out.

Frank Ntilikina or Lauri Markkanen would seem like the obvious pick there. The question is, would Demps be willing to keep the #10-12 pick?
Posted on 2/15/17 at 1:30 pm to hassan101
Giles, as a freshman in college, is 6'11" 240
Davis, as a draftee in the NBA, was 6'10" 222
What makes you think Giles won't be able to battle with centers? AD has gained 23 pounds since being drafted, why can't Giles do the same?

in the future Giles can play center not year one

if the pick isnt top 6 its not worth keeping. need whichever SF falls (probably Isaac, maybe Tatum)

That's the logic that got us where we are. No guarantee that the #9 pick turns out to be an Andre Drummond type player, but getting an average player for the pick and not taking a chance is what keeps bad teams from improving
