There is such a generational disconnect in terms of media consumed right now. Kids under 15-17 don't watch tv. If allowed they mostly watch YouTube. YouTube has big stars (in the eyes of this age group).
I don't think most adults have any idea what kids are watching on YouTube. We had some kids over the other day (parents say they rarely get iPad play time), and they knew at least 6 you tube stars I named and had opinions on all of them.
When I told them how one of the ones I mentioned had a really funny episode about sticking Haramabe's dick into Miley Cyrus's arse when she is teerking they thought I was making it up and that their kids don't watch that sort of stuff.
Parents either don't admit their kids are watching this stuff on YouTube or they have no idea what they are watching.
The Harambe dick joke was in an episode of Sky Does Minecraft.

I was finishing high school and starting college when Youtube really blew up. I am really not sure what point PewDeePie got so popular. I watch a lot of video game related content including AVGN, Lets Plays, podcasts, etc, but I've never really seen any of PewDeePie's videos show up on my feed. What content I have seen is extremely clickbaity

I stay away from most of the larger Youtube channels though. The must subscribers most of my channels have is around 1-3 million.
