I just really think we need Superman done properly.
It boggles my mind that they just have never gotten Superman right on screen. It makes no sense whatsoever.
.......
But I think if done right it would be great.
I agree. Superman is a pretty easy character. Unlike Batman, he's not very complex. So what you do is make the world around him complex and that is where they have failed.
Superman Returns was boring and vanilla, so they overreacted with Man of Steel. MoS was too brutal so they tried to correct it with BvS. The subplot of BvS was one I've been hoping for for decades. How would the world react to a Superbeing showing up and saving the day all the time. Some people would hate him. Others would worship him. How would governments react to him? Would they ban him or use him as a crutch? That's a fascinating storyline that was never used before that deserves to be fleshed out. Unfortunately, it got wasted on BvS.
IMO, they need to bring back the Donner version of Superman, Williams theme and all...of course do it with someone with better screen chops than Brandon Routh.

Wait, have YOU read All Star Superman? There are some dark, rip your heart out moments in that thing.

just trim out the stuff about Superman dying.
And then you don't have All Star Superman.

Superman wouldn't just frick up a guy's truck because he spilled a beer in his face. He wouldn't make out with Lois Lane on top of the bodies of the innocent. He wouldn't destroy a military satellite right in front of a military vehicle. He's just so petty compared to the character he actually is.
A fair point. But I like the MoS character. We've had multiple movies of Boy Scout superman. He's not that interesting.
I always assumed superman would gradually become more like the Boy Scout as he matures and gets used to his powers. In MoS he is a young man who is really just discovering himself and he has all the emotions of a young man. A young man who has had to hold back all his life for fear of hurting someone.

The point of the Kents is that they've raised Clark appropriately and he's worked out all of these issues before donning the cape. If you don't want a boy scout then read a different character.
With all of the faults of Donner's Superman, at least they had the Kents right. Clark works it all through with the help of the Kents and his Kryptonian training. When he gets to Metropolis, he's already too good to be true. But that's Superman.

Yep, he took a lot of flack for it but he was correct. He's definitely plugged in with batman related news. He's heard that JL is a mess, which is disappointing to hear.

Yes it does, and that's why it should have been the template that Superman and all the other characters were based on. All Superman works for basically any Superman story you need to tell. And yeah, I doubt those assholes Snyder or Goyer have read it. Kevin Smith thinks the only comic books Snyder has ever read are The Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, and 300.
Where he pulled Man of Steel from in the Superman mythos I don't have a clue. The only thing I can think of is trying to make the exact opposite of Superman Returns. Well, he succeeded in that, but none of Superman or his universe were left intact.

bullshite. He has not been done properly yet. Sure maybe Donner got the Superman of that era right, but he's changed a lot since then. Superman isn't a Boy Scout so much as trying to be the standard humanity wants to achieve. And this alone is why Luthor hates him.

But he can still get there. This MoS origin story allows for actual character development of Superman. Rather than start off with the simple bland Superman you want, MoS allows for a more natural and even realistic progression. (It also allows moviegoers to finally see Superman unleashed.) Pa Kent raised him right and did his best, but he's still a young man who has to find his own way. And like most young men, they come to realize the father was right. Pa Kent held him back all his life. When Pa died, nothing--even physics--held him back. And maybe it took the Zod destruction for him to realize that Pa was right and he needs to be wise in using his powers.
Or maybe Snyder wasn't thinking any of that and I'm wrong.

Superman's portray in BvS was awful. Literally all he did was mope around for 2 hours before getting impaled by Doomsday. I actually think Man of Steel is pretty underrated.

Completely agree. I really enjoy MOS. All the complaining about the destruction was amusing to me. Is it really a stretch to assume that if some superpowers came here there wouldn't be any collateral damage? It's a ridiculous complaint.

Well, it's not the destruction itself that is the problem, it is how oblivious Snyder is to what is going on off screen. I couldn't believe what I was seeing when I first saw it. If you can perceive that thousands perished due to Zod and Superman's duel, then it makes Zod's death entirely pointless and ridiculous.
I still don't believe that dozens of people went through that script and didn't see that incredible narrative flaw. And it's an easy fix: replace the nameless family of 4 with Lois. That's it. Snyder thought none of this through, and has Superman and Lois playing tongue tag at Ground Zero.

No doubt it's flawed, but the complaining was way over the top (and i'm not talking about you specifically). He's young and he doesn't have complete control of his powers yet. Zod, otoh, was an experienced general.
With that being said, I hated how he was used in BvS. There was no character development with Supes, and that's very disappointing.

How does this explain things like him crow hopping an explosive 18 wheeler and letting it destroy a building instead of just stopping it?
Or using buildings to sling Zod around in?
