If that is the long term goal with him, he isn't worth a high 1st. we are gonna frick this up...

I would argue that Kanter is worth far more than a mid-first. Especially if he was on a bargain contract. If you can get a big that can give you 25 mpg and score in bunches while your starters rest, that is far better than you are likely to get with a mid-first pick in any draft.

But they have to be smart enough to use him that way

Pretty much.

Not forgetting Okafor has his own injury issues.

Of all the trades I thought we might get into, this beats all of them. And not in a good way.
