Because most of them suck at their job, and they know it. And I doubt it will raise wages, but create a more rewarding work environment that acknowledges the best.

Why do the teacher's unions oppose more opportunities for their members????

Because they would then have to admit that there are a sizable number of terrible teachers in their ranks.

More school choice will lead to more schools and smaller classrooms and like in any industry create more competition and higher wages for talented labor---in this case teachers.

Link?

Real (adjusted for inflation) wages for labor, talented or otherwise, have been essentially stagnant for 30+ years while corporate profits and top management salaries have exploded. How is that a model for teachers to make more money?

I can't imagine why a union would be opposed to putting their members' jobs in the hands of profit-motivated corporations who have proven throughout history that they will squeeze every drop of blood out of labor to increase company profits and never share a penny of it with the workers whose sweat earned it.

That we know about everyone involved. Proponents of school choice don't give a shite about education quality either. They want privatization, less government spending and more opportunity for corporate profits. Opponents want protection of teachers' jobs regardless of the teachers' ability and political power. Quality of education is completely irrelevant to both sides.

Unions want control of and/or responsibility for salaries.
School choice shifts the salary paradigm toward individual quality.

One of the biggest obstacles to improving teacher quality is, oddly enough, the requirements to become a teacher and the existence of education degrees.

Alas, the teachers LOVE those rules because they create job security.

Because it will be a meritocracy - there will be no more "tenure over all" mentality.
