Neither spinoff was cut by Moffat. The Sara Jane Adventures ended when Elisabeth Sladen died (Matt's Doctor actually appeared in an episode) and Torchwood had a season in 2011 (that fricking sucked). Davies then stopped working for a couple years because of personal issues and Torchwood kind of got forgotten about.

What I meant by "cutting all that off" was the complete and permanent divorcing of the Doctor from all those characters. Why spend all that time building a universe of supporting cast just to shitcan it all just when it's hitting its stride?

I get what happened with some of the stuff that Davies created falling by the wayside. Some of it also had to do with actors and actresses moving on to other gigs (or passing away). I do wish Captain Jack Harkness would have popped up in the Smith years. It would have been fun to have him hitting on Amy, Rory and/or River. (Although River Song kind of took his place - I always thought that as much as RTD wanted to sleep with Captain Jack, Moffat wanted to sleep with River Song)

I thought they took a slightly strange approach from Capaldi's first episode. I wondered how much influence he had on the writing, and if it had to do with him personally being too much of a fanboy and wanting to firmly establish himself as The Doctor, instead of just jumping right into the roll. It's as if they tried to go back to an earlier version of the Doctor as an eccentric, mysterious old man. Which is tough to do when a significant loyal portion of the audience has seen the character evolve and expand over the years.

I thought Matt Smith was pretty natural from the beginning, and did a great job of conveying the kind of lunacy and goofiness you might expect from a nearly-immortal time traveller.
