On a non retina MacBook an ssd swap is just as easy as installing ram. The only difficult part is properly backing up or migrating your OS. The physical install itself is very simple

I didn't say it was hard, just a bit more in depth. Ribbon cable can give noobs fits and some of them break them. I don't know people's abilities here, good to give a warning.

Been using Macs since 1990 and still do - working on my Retina MacBook Pro now - but will switch when this one dies out. It is about 5 years old now and feeling its age.

Too expensive, not enough innovation. I can do most everything I need now on my simple little work laptop - an hp resolve. And I can actually use it as a book reader too.

Just not worth the $$ anymore. Talk her out of it.

If you can't, use the Ed. discount. Get AppleCare - but it will bump the $$ you fork over even higher.

I've been eyeballing used Macs at Best Buy for my wife. I'll never be comfortable with Apple's prices

Watch for a Best Buy Mac sale, which isn't all that uncommon. During a sale, their open box items (which they have a lot of) are discounted as well and you can get some killer deals.

How often does Best Buy have a Mac sale (what time of year)? I am not well-versed in the world of Apple discounts, but I am actively trying to learn right now.
