So my HP printer stoped working (print head error). The printer is less than 2 years old. I called the HP help desk. They remote logged into my computer(didn't like that part) and this "tech rep" promptly stateed that I have a run32dll.exe virus. He tried to sell me a "warranty". Of course I did not get it. I have run the Mcafee virus scan, MS defender scan and a Malwarebytes scan. All have come back negative. I'm pretty sure that he had no clue what's going on. I will be getting a new printer. Any suggestion on how to check if I actually have a virus?

yea you didn't talk to the "HP help desk". time to back your stuff up and wipe that drive. chances are you didnt have anything wrong with your computer other than a print driver issue but who knows what the person you gave access to you computer could have installed

Thanks. That's what I was thing of doing. Like an idiot, I let them do the remote log in. He tried to show me how my CPU was running at over 50-70%. Then I explained to him of course it is, there are 2 scans and your remote log on that's happening. Time to start over.

What was the # of the HP help desk, and how did you get the #?

I got it off of the HP website and confirmed it via the HP support app that was downloaded with the printer driver.

I'll check with my tec guy, we take over thousands of printers every year. HP by far give us the most issues.

If you got it off the legit HP website, then I wouldn't think you need to worry about them installing anything on your computer. Making a backup is always a good idea.

If that's the error you are getting on the printer's LED then there's little reason for him to remote into your computer other than for using your pc to run diagnostics on the printer to verify the error.

Most malicious software that create bogus run32dll.exe files are easily caught and stopped by most of the products available today.
Run32dll.exe is a legit filename for a Windows file located at C:\Windows\System32. If you check your processes and see another copy running from a different location then yeah that's malware/virus activity.
Other than that it sounds like you got a bad tech.

Thanks for the help! It's still in the systems portion of the c drive. Ol boy just tried to make me buy something that I didn't need. Thanks again

How do you get rid of the Run32dll.exe. I get pop ups saying there is an error. This happens whenever I turn on my laptop.

Download malwarebytes and run it. Should be able to find and remove the malware.

Malwarebytes is a great go-to.

If you're getting startup error pop ups, and you think you may be infected, it's time to reinstall your OS.
