My wife and BIL (neither from Louisiana) can't understand a word he says. It's not that his voice is deep, it's "gravelly", like the cookie monster. Couple that with a thick S.La. accent, and it's tough for those not from S.La. to understand him.

I'm not originally from Louisiana and I understand him pretty well
