Anything other than a Mitsubishi Mirage.

Especially compared to a Honda or Toyota.
There's a real reason that Mitsubishi's North American sales and quality numbers are dismal.
Their build quality is all over the board.
You might luck into a good one. But there's certainly a better chance that you'll have more problems (on average) than a Honda or Toyota owner.
Additionally it's a crappy and spare dealer network for Mitsubishi.

Volkswagen Jetta. A TDI if you can find one.

This.
Find a one owner example of one of these cars with all the maintenance records at one location.
Pay the original owner a fair cash price. Not a dealer or reseller.
Profit.

If you are really in San Fran, I have found your car.

Keep in mind that at 60,000 miles you have to change the timing belt and water pump.

4 cylinder Accord. Mine had 300k+, 2 with 200k+, not a single major issue I couldn't fix in an hour in the driveway. There are 2 parked in my driveway right now which my daughters drive.

Toyota Camry
I put 185,000 mi. on a 2001 Camry second car that I got in '05 for $9k with 40,000 on the odometer. It still ran fine with 31mpg hwy. (4 cyl. is good enough on the highway) and had cold air/heat etc. when I gave it up. Changed the oil, tires, and replaced one front brake in ten years. Big enough for adults in the back seat and luggage/golf clubs in the trunk. The Carolla and Hondas are much smaller.
Volkswagen more expensive maintenance and parts.
