I'd like to get a new compass for hunting. The one I have wasnt correct Saturday and my gps compass has to be recalibrated more and more it seems.

Suunto makes the best compasses.

I don't know if this is the exact one I use (I'm not at the house), but it's almost identical. One piece of advice in general about compasses: if you have magnetic pockets on your jacket or waders you need to hold the compass out away from them or the magnets will dick up the compass reading.

And one more piece of unsolicited advice: get two and keep the spare in your pack in case you drop one. Two is one and one is none.

Thanks baws. I put it on a log away from me and it was still very off. I have several of those cheap clip on ones that I keep attached to various gear as backup as well. Fortunately I was taught about moss growing on the north side of trees and can generally navigate pretty good based on that usually. Honestly I've relied on my gps for too many years and try to just use it for waypoints now.

quote:Don't count on that. Also, knowing how to use a map and compass is a great skill. I've been many places where a GPS has a hard time locking onto satellites. I used my compass almost exclusively in the woods.

Silva - old fashioned, but still the best.

Yep. Silva compasses are awesome. I've had the same one for about 10 years. It points north.

Even a million dollar compass isn't worth a shite if someone doesn't know how to use it in combination with a map

Yep, you need to practice with it and make sure you know how to use them.
I have a Suunto I keep in my bag. I can almost guarantee I got it off of Amazon.

I'm going to have to semi-retract my recommendation. I used my Silva 5-6 days a week, every week, for years without a hiccup. Evidently letting them sit after that much use causes air bubbles (no idea why, but that's what's reported). They exchange them for free, so I will get another one, but I am going to either order a Ranger from Sweden or get a Suunto MC-2G

I had one of those plastic ones, went back to old GI issue.
