I feel like the movie did too much and lex was centerpiece to that. Lex Luthor is a very complex villain and they really didn't get into his complexity.
In addition, they set him up as the archnemesis of superman but then put him in prison which was stupid. what makes lex so great as a villain is not his insanity, but instead his business empire. If they had done him right, lex could have been in almost every movie as Lex is intertwined in superman's life. And also, him and bruce wayne do business together.
