It depends on the system, for hue you name everything in the hue app and it gets all its info from the hue hub about what each room and light is named.

That's why I mentioned hubs and smart plugs. I feel like I can leverage the lamps and perhaps just use some simple dimmable LED's there. Elsewhere a Hub could potentially be used for the leverage I need for the use case I'm talking about.
But I simply haven't really scratched the surface of the smart home/LED combo to know enough to be able to implement my idea here with confidence that I'm doing it correctly and for a price that allows for future flexibility and not breaking the bank.
