That is, ESPN doesn't even get to choose whether it wants to air the game or not. The NFL just says, "You're airing it, give us $100 million."
Ther'es probably an easy answer here, but what would happen if ESPN refused? Yes I kwno there's probably truckloads of documents and contracts that have been signed, but in an ELI5 scneario here what would the repercussions be?

quote:I'm no lawyer, but I'm guessing ESPN wouldn't air the game but would still owe the NFL $100mil. If not, then ESPN would do just that and save $75 in losses.

It is amazing to me that the NFL paraded around as a not-for-profit organization
You realize the individual teams paid taxes, right?

I've been wondering overall what happens when the tv market crashes and the people that don't watch sports won't have to pay for ESPN.
indeed, packages are already developed which do not include ESPN, so its happening

quote:The poster said "and people wonder why ESPN is losing money" - not referring to this specific deal but referring to overall. Just to be clear - ESPN is massively profitable.

quote:I saw an article from may that said that Disney was getting heartburn because ESPN earnings were down 5%. I'm guessing their margins are much greater than that.
possibly not, but they are pretty much breaking even from what ive been reading
quote:Yes, I agree. I just want it to be painfully clear to the geniuses in this thread that ESPN is a ridiculously profitable enterprise at present.
