Civil forfeiture is a legal creation to allow government theft, and it does not curb bad behavior.
So is taxation

Sounds like a shitily-written bill.

So we don't need taxation?
What would Abraham Lincoln do? (Lincoln signed the Revenue Act of 1861, creating the first U.S. income tax - a flat tax of 3 percent on incomes above $800 ($21,100 in current dollars)

When these laws first came on the books, police and DAs had some discretion. But then lawyers got involved. Next thing you know, the police and DAs had to treat everyone the same. If you let one person off, for whatever reason, that could be used as the basis for a lawsuit.(You took my stuff, why didn't you take theirs ) It's easier to take everyone's shite and have the ones that got fricked over sue, than it is to having to defend why you didn't follow the exact letter of the law.
bullshite. This is a fricking apologists line of fricking horse shite. The police have as much motivation as anyone to fricking steal from people. Traffic citations being a prime example of the worthless revenue generating bullshite that cops do as a profession these days.
GTFOOH with this shite. lawyers... pshhh.

This simply proves an alcoholic will :
1. Drive without a license
2. Drive any vehicle they can get their hands on(including lawmowers - google it). They could care less if the vehicle is theirs or not.
3. Continue to drink and drive unless they are incarcerated or electronically prohibited from driving
and it proves the government has no idea how to curb the problem.

Seize illegal property sure, but committing (or even worse simply being accused of) a crime does not mean you forfeit legal property.
The cops do not have to accuse you of anything if cash is involved. If you have a large amount of cash, >$3000, they just take it and it is hell to get it back. People who have won money at casinos have had it stolen by law enforcement thieves because of civil forfeiture laws. frick that shite.

But Eric Locher, an assistant attorney for the city, said the city plans to continue to take vehicles under city ordinance after the law goes into effect.

You won't be missing much....Albuquerque is about like Lawrenceville, Georgia.....basically 10 exits on the interstate with chain restaurants and chain hotels...and that is about it....

This is a HUGE part of why there is more animosity between police and the civilians they police...because we have changed the job description of the police greatly....police are no asked to be psychiatrists and collection muscle for the state....and folks have never liked the collections man....

Has the Supreme Court ruled on these laws?
Posted on 12/24/16 at 9:48 am to jb4
the Supreme Court recently ruled that if your assets are frozen due to forfeiture-based laws, you can't even tap into those frozen funds to pay for your criminal defense

This is legalized theft. Even if one wins the case, the fees involved would break the average person.
Government always wins.
Government always wins.

The big thing is that the court and the prosecutor usually share in the loot. There is NO ONE in the system with a vested interest in protecting the citizen.

Agree. Court costs fund the courts. Guess how you get accessed court costs?
The problem is when you ask the general public if they want to be taxed more to fund courts they say no. Granted if what the governments took in was used more effectively I think it would be a wash.
