I always thought Martin was under appreciated.
Defense - Martin was better. Simmons was horrible
Rebounding - Simmons slightly better
Shooting - Martin by far
Passing - Simmons
The team was better with Martin. I understand the Mickey impact but if you remember Mickey was awful at the end of that season. Also while being a great shot blocker, he was not a good on ball defender. Keep in mind that Simmons team added Victor and Blakeney. So on paper they were thought to be better.
But the main reason I would argue Martin had a greater impact was he allowed us to have better spacing on offense. Simmons offered no threat of hitting an outside shot so everyone could just sag into the paint.
I think he should have been in the post. What good is it to have a 6-11 point forward standing by the 3 point line when he can't shoot?
