An Embarrassment of Riches: The LSU RB Position Over the Decades

Has the LSU running back position historically been the most consistently excellent position of the entire football program?
Looking back in modern history, who was the last less-than-spectacular starting running for the team? I'm having trouble actually remembering. Was Robert Toomer the starting running back at any point in the early '90s?

Any class under Miles is an embarrassment of riches.....
Too much talent came through with the lack of development. We are the University of Texas of the SEC. Tons of raw talent when they come to LSU leave, and become NFL Studs!

Richard Murphy started a few games
Shyrone Carey was less than spectacular but I loved that little dude. Tree trunk legs I tell ya.

People sometimes forget that Josh Reed was a RB his first couple of seasons at LSU until Saban moved him to receiver. Guess that's what happens when you have Davis, and Toefield in front of you.
Also loved watching Tommy Banks blow up Florida in 96.

Michael Ford and Keiland Willians probably the weakest.

DB has still been better. Running back may be deeper across the board since 2000, but since 2000, we've had 8 AAs at DB and just 1 at RB. If you wanna go back to 1970, we've had 11 AAs at DB and 3* AAs at RB (Faulk was an AA as a all-purpose player in 1996).

I believe since 1995 we have had a back on our roster that went on to start a game in the league as a RB. Pretty impressive.

Hilliard and James back in the day.

Toefield will always be my #1

It's crazy to me that Hill's dominant 2013 season of 1400 yards at 6.8 ypc has been completely overshadowed by LF7 and DG5. Having those three RBs consecutively is the best string of backs in school history. This is just since 2010:
Ridley - NFL
Ware - NFL
Blue - NFL
Ford - NFL
Hilliard - NFL
Magee - NFL
Hill - NFL
LF7 - NFL
Guice

DBU could just as easily be RBU. We've had good backfields for as long as I can remember. I can't remember the last time that position was a concern. Usually the third RB on the depth chart could be a solid starter for most teams in the country. And it's been that way since the late 90s. Few teams have had as much talent in the backfield year in year out. The only other team that jumps to mind is Miami. They've had some all time great backfields in the past 20 years.
