Why is it so Difficult to Assemble a Great Coaching Staff?

We can all agree the coaching change from Miles to Orgeron was long and painful and could have been handled better. It's no different when Bama tried for over a decade to right it's own ship. And the irony of that is Bama AD Mal Moore offered Rich Rodriquez the job before Saban. Yes, no Saban at Alabama if Coach Rich Rod had said yes. (Bama fans don't like to hear this)
So why is it so difficult to assemble a staff when you fire your coach 4 weeks into the regular season?
1) Too many cooks in the kitchen meaning a board members, AD, University President, Donars, etc involved?
2) School, State and other politics?
3) Inadequate personal in key leadership positions?
The most refreshing part of all this is the LSU Tiger Football team, the players, they all seem to be a great group of kids playing for one of the more unique Universities with a special football stadium and culture. So it was great to hear the new coaches putting the players first and focusing on team to block out all the external distractions. A guess a great lesson for all students to learn about the life of the business world that awaits them.

Personnel, yes, and combined with a fan base that is at its most ignorant when it's most important, you get the clusterfrick that is last November and this November.

Because not everyone you want to hire is going to say yes. Hot shot coordinators are going to have big price tags and may have their eyes on a Head Coaching spot (Kiffin).
Incumbent big time head coaches have to be coaxed away from big time schools and rising hot shot head coaches are getting calls from other big schools (Herman to UT).
The LSU powers could have had the very best staff pegged, but it is very difficult to get all of them to say yes.

Top 5 DC. Top 5 (maybe 10) OC. And then one of the best motivators (who happens to be one of us) at the top and you're complaining? Tell me with your extensive business, negotiation and management background how would you have done better?

What makes coaches great are their ability to do more things well than the good coaches are capable. By definition great coaches are few and programs looking for great coaches vast.
A problem of scarcity.
The next issue is the incredible number of variables that produce success and then compound that problem with multipliers like chemistry. It's not a science it's an art in large part.

There are more programs capable of greatness than there are coaches who can deliver it. It's really just that simple.

i believe most coaches in major D-1 football are pretty similar in terms of knowledge, teaching ability, and scheming. The thing that separates great coaches from mediocre coaches is talent & resources.
Most coaches across the country could win with bamas team

You can't just call up the coaches you want and hire them in 2 days time, that's not how it works. First you have to assemble your list of candidates which requires background checks and a bunch of information gathering to determine the best options. Then you conduct interviews which have to be scheduled and it's easiest to wait until the season is over for this. Not to mention your candidate likely has multiple interviews lined up throughout the weeks.
The most important thing is to make the right hire. You don't rush this just to please fans or even a recruiting class.

It's not. It's difficult for head coaches who are morons.

you are completely ignoring the fact that LSU does not exist in a vacuum. there are other great football programs. and each candidate has different wants and needs in his career. despite what some know nothings on here believe, LSU vetted quite a few candidates for HC. we hired a search firm. it is customary for the search firm to contact agents of many coaches; at least those that met LSU's criteria. also, some agents contacted them. from this list, the best candidates were interviewed over the phone and the list was then shortened. once that happened the "nitty gritty" begins.
newsflash: many successful HC's are happy where they are. surveys show that most people, once they achieve upper income status, are NOT motivated solely by money; in fact, money isn't even #1 on the list. their present location, stability and their families are extremely important. this has been proven time and time and time again by the top colleges in the country; yet many LSU fans continue to believe that coaches line up to coach here. it simply isn't true. LSU was probably "turned down" by a number of coaches before we ended up with four finalists. what I mean by turned down, the coach simply wasn't interested right now in moving. of the final four, it appears that coach O was it; fisher, herman, and fedora didn't deal.
so much of the coaching search is about timing and luck. again, it has always been this way.i can assure you that there is just as much (or more) politics involved at other top football programs. our present situation has ZERO to do with our personnel in leadership positions. our luck with our main candidates was just not there.
I think O is going to surprise a lot of people. a also think the "hate the coach" crowd will be toxic as hell. that attitude really does hurt LSU's image inside and outside of the coaching ranks.

It is not that difficult to assemble a great staff. What is difficult is keeping the "instant gratification" crowd happy while quieting the cancerous voices of the "nega-everything" crowd.

It's hard to assemble a "great" anything, be it coaching staff, business leadership, presidential cabinet, faculty.
"Great" is, by definition, rare.

Because of the disproportionate amount of "great" coaches.
