Agreed. Maybe that was just him trying to limit mistakes from his freshman QB, but I was not impressed with the play calling in the few Texas games I watched this year.

Gilbert and Briles like to play the numbers game. Spread you out wide and count the players in box. If you put 2 dbs on the 3 receiver side they throw the bubble screen, if your db plays more than 5 yards off throw the bubble screen. If you play tight man they throw the deep ball on the sideline. They also like to play fast 17 - 20 sec a play to confuse the defense. It's a simple concept and it works on average secret defenses. Not much creativity in the run game compared to Helfrich's spread.
