Calling long range shooters and elk/ram hunters

So looking to get a rifle for long range target shooting and for future elk and ram hunts. Plan on loading for it and rounds I am looking at are 300 RUM and 30 Nosler. Any other 30 call rounds I should look at? As for the rifle I am thinking a Rem 700 LR if I go with the 300 RUM. Decently priced for what your getting and has good reviews. Only think I am a little worried about it is its 9lbs without a scope. May get a little heavy lugging it around chasing after an elk.

I have a 300 WM and love it. No reason to go bigger in North America and it will shoot as far as you are capable of. I got mine for elk. It's pretty much the most popular elk caliber.

And that being said, very long range shots are for targets only. Don't be unethical and try 400+ yard shots on a living animal

300 rem ultra mag would be my preference. But i love my 7 rem mag.

A well set up rifle with a competent shooter hunting at long ranges (400+) can be more ethical than what I've seen people do at 75.

Meh, with the proper equipment, practice and situation 600 yards for an elk is not that hard or unheard of. This set up will be for shooting at those ranges which is why I am not interested in the win mag.

Couple days ago you were asking about the cheapest deer rifle that was worth a flip and now you are asking about elk and ram guns wth

Bc I didn't want to bring my weatherby that's has hand loaded hot rounds out in a monsoon on a meat haul for does.

That 300 rum might not be very fun at the range fyi. Probably not great on a barrel either. For a long range range gun maybe a 6.5 creed or 257 wby would be better. Altho the 257 will burn a barrel up quicker too. Scratch the el cheapo 30-06 u wanted and get a tikka in 300 win mag or 7 rem mag to kill anything in north America. Then get u wanna the smaller cartridges to shoot at range. Just imo. Just read post above. Get black synthetic stock wt stainless barrel and no more weather worries.

My dad is also part of the 300 Win Mag club. Handloads his own Barnes TTSX 180gr rounds that shoot easily sub-MOA (usually about 1/2" to 3/8" groups).
He has been hunting deer his entire life and has been floored with the performance of the all-copper TTSX. Said he's never seen them drop dead so quickly. He even purposely shot a doe (with his 270) in the gut so that there would be a blood trail for his dogs to train on. He ended up dropping it right there.
So that would be my rec - 300 Win Mag. And my ammo rec - Barnes TTSX.

Wait, why aren't you interested in the winmag?
Other calibers: 30-06, 7 rem mag, 300 Norma mag.
Also, if target shooting and a custom gun, you might want to go ahead and buy a couple barrels and have them chambered and ready to go. Buy a vise and wrench and then change them your self. Benefit is you shouldn't really have to change your load because the barrel would be chambered with the same reamer immediately after so there is minimal wear on the reamer as well.

UL Mark V in 270win. Yes I know it will kill both elk and ram at 300yrds especially with the rounds I have for it but I'm not trying 600 with it.

Bc those rounds aren't fun to hand load for and at 500-600 yards the performance difference is quite significant compared to the RUM and similar rounds.

Get whatever caliber your heart desires but to think an elk can't be taken at 600 with a WM is foolish. The guy I went elk hunting with this year has taken an elk at 450 yds with a 270 130 gr. bullet. That's all he uses. Plenty of elk being taken at 1000 yards on youtube with the 300. If you want a 338 or a 500 get whatever but to say a 300 isn't capable of what your asking is just wrong.

Reading comprehension wasn't your strong suit I see.

How do you know he isn't capable of that?
