Too much objectivity for this board, someone claimed earlier that US consumers started buying Asian goods once Obama was elected.
The appropriate response is frick you pussy. MELT!

I think minimill refers to the truncated processes within the mill (such as if the raw material is scrap steel or iron ore pellets)...not necessarily the size of the entire facility.
Braddock is a beast though.

Shares of the Pittsburgh-based company have soared about 80 percent since Trump's stunning victory on Nov. 8.
...and the anti-dumping tariffs imposed by the Obama administration, and the Commerce Department's investigation into dumping. I'm as hopeful as anyone that Trump can prop up this shitty economy, but Trump hasn't done anything yet to help US Steel.

The market reacted very positively to his election, and US Steel was among a number of huge beneficiaries. His infrastructure plan is being credited with propping up the share prices of equipment manufacturers and construction companies.

His "plan" hasn't been articulated other than "we need better infrastructure, our airports are third world". Look, I'm behind Trump, but the reality is that US Steel hasn't rehired anyone yet, and the existing administrations anti-dumping actions are what has stabilized the company.

Just because things don't get manufactured here anymore, doesn't mean things aren't manufactured.
quote:I don't understand those who have contempt for the jobs themsleves.
The contempt people have for manufacturing jobs, I'll never understand.
BUT I at least, have contempt for the politicians who use manufacturing jobs to justify more government (crony capitalism, increased trade regulations, forced unionozation, etc.).
In addition, I dislike when those jobs are used as some sole representation of "better times" with a focus on going back to that while dismissing the changing market.
I mean the most jobs the merrier, but I find it concerning that this is the sole focus, to a point where increasing government is argued as a justified means, while there the record number of unfilled jobs seems to he completely ignored.
I am with those that argue getting people jobs is vital, but it seems disingenuous to argue that but ignore all other sector of jobs. Focusing on both is great, but ignoring 5 million open jobs doesn't make sense.

We have gotten to the point where there mere mention of infrastructure spending and roll back of environmental regulations has a positive benefit on the share price of construction, materials, and equipment companies.

Well, this new direction that the EPA is about to take with Scott Pruitt at the helm is still an academic discussion. He has not been confirmed yet nor has Trump taken office yet.
It should speak volumes that the simply criticizing heavy handed environmental regulatory tactics provokes a positive market response. That's where we are now.

quote:Agreed, but we need to ensure that companies back in the talk with action.
I don't see how this is a bad thing.
quote:And if that's a natural market reaction to the election and the views of the populace, then that's outstanding. But I prefer this to be either organic and/or a result of less government (lower taxes; fewer regulations). If Trump keeps it about that, then I'm on board.
Trump is making it cool for companies to add American jobs and have a made in America label.
quote:But I think we need to realize that even manufacturers return, the jobs won't be returning to the extent that they left and that trend will only grow stronger as technology advances.
Theven pro America atmosphere will drive American manufacturing more than independent deals will

True, the days of solid, middle class pay for a semi-skilled assembly position that lasts for 35 years are long gone and ain't coming back. We need to quit lying to folks about this so they can adapt to current and future realities.
Posted on 12/7/16 at 8:24 pm to buckeye_vol
Isn't that bc a lot of those open jobs are either part time jobs or jobs with low wages? I think that was a major reason Trump boasted the carrier avg wage per hour was $30.

I agree we're going in the right direction, but that still doesn't allow me to suspend intellectual honesty. Obama fought Chinese steel dumping, that's been the real shot in their arm. Now Trump needs to goose this shitty Obama economy. Give credit where it's due.

I work for a company that is looking to make a mill run size order of steel. We are desperately trying to get the quantities finalized and place the order because prices are starting to skyrocket and the mills have advised us that we better be quick because they are about to go up again.
Coincidence? I think not (not talking about US steel in particular, but the market in general).

Regardless, people need to either adapt to the job market and find a way to become more valuable (skills, education, hard-working), and/or take the lesser job. If one is waiting for "better" jobs, but isn't either trying to learn/increase skills or taking what they can get, then why do they deserve those better jobs in the first place?

I think we're in a cycle where we're telling those min wage workers "it's their fault" for not adapting, while telling the former factory workers it's someone else's fault. Biases at play perhaps....
