I think whoever the hire ends up being, it REALLY needs to be someone to breathe life and energy into the program. That's why Gundy would be a solid hire (maybe he'll cut his mullet for the interview...let's keep an eye on this!).

But if we lose out on a guy like Herman, there are worse choices than PJ Fleck. He could either end up being a dud, or the next great coach, but either way, I don't see him setting the program back.

I'd also put Taggart in my 2nd tier, or 2b.

I'd take 10 years of a Craig Bohl led program

MacIntyre won like two conference games before this season. I need to see more.

3) Dave Aranda
4) Jim Mora

Honestly, if you can't reel in Herman or Fisher, I think it's worth taking a shot on Dave Aranda. He's young, and probably in the top 1% of all football minds in CFB. Plus, he has a lot of strong connections to very talented coordinators. I think it's ultimately quite similar to hiring Tom Herman: it's something of a risk hire that probably involves a substantial rebuild period for the program, but that could have enormous payoff in the end. I think Aranda could be the next Nick Saban, and it would be a shame to pass on the opportunity to find out, just to hire a Larry Fedora or Mike Gundy.

Herman
Jimbo

Chip Kelly

Patterson (probably won't come)
Stoops
Dantonio
Petrino (probably won't come)
Briles (tons of backlash but great coach and would definitely take the job for cheap)

Gundy
Fleck
Aranda (if we get this far down the list I'm willing to roll the dice)
Fedora
MacIntyre
Taggart

Mullen

I'd also like to talk to some of the NFL coaches that are on the hotseat.
