I would stay within 7-8 blocks of Burnside. That is the main road dividing North Portland from South Portland. All of those breweries that I showed you are within walking distance of Burnside. The Westside breweries in the photos are all within 3 blocks of each other. The Pearl district is in NW Portland, but there is plenty of bars and restaurants south of Burnside in SW Portland, as well. The Pearl is going to be expensive, but you may find cheaper accomodations just west of I-405 near Providence Park. That is still walking distance, or a short Uber. There is also a Fred Meyer right there, and you can stock up on everything, there.
Portland is easy to get around in. It is divided into quadrants: NW, SW, NE, and SE. Burnside divides the city into N and S. The Willamette River (it's pronouced wil-LAM-it, damnit) divides the city into E and W. If you are north of Burnside and west of the river, all of the street names will be prefaced with NW.
For example: 100 NW 14th Ave is in the 100 block North of Burnside and 14 blocks west of the river.
There are two 14th Avenues in Portland. One is on the east side of the river, and the other is on the west side of the river. 1st Avenue runs parallel to the river on both sides. The one on the west side is either NW 1st Ave or SW 1st Ave, depending on whether you are north of Burnside St or south of Burnside St. The one on the east side of the river is either NE 1st Ave, or SE 1st Ave, again, depending on where you are, relative to Burnside.
The numbered streets go up as you go away from the river, so if you find yourself on SW 20th Ave, you are south of Burnside and 20 blocks west of the river.
So look at the street numbers and you'll be able to orient yourself. Hope that wasn't too confusing.
