That's a factor, no doubt. But Mel Gibson is seen as a kook by a lot of people, especially those on the left. So this movie unites people from the left and right into jumping to conclusions. Mel Gibson - bringing people together.

You shouldn't be. This is a very right leaning board and a movie about a guy who refused to carry a gun while in the army is not going to viewed favorably by many here no matter how well it's made or how amazing the story is.

One of the things about this film was that it didn't try to push any political message (be it gun control, 2nd amendment, whatever). It just told the story. It didn't disparage Doss for his beliefs nor did it discredit the other soldiers who did take up arms. I felt that both the conscientious objector and the gun-wielding soldiers were treated equally as heroes, which in my opinion they are.

Did it embellish details or sensationalize the account of what really happened? Probably so. But what Doss actually did was almost superhuman. The movie didn't over exaggerate that point and make it into a superhero movie. He was not made out to be invincible. I felt that the movie showed that these were all ordinary men who had extraordinary courage to do what they did. Not just Doss, but all the soldiers.

Also, I was apprehensive about Vince Vaughn but he provided well-timed and necessary comedic relief. The film as a whole was very well cast.

At the end of his closing remarks, the band would play him off to "The Reins of Castamere" and he would murder everyone "Eh Ga de Breagh!"

I just enjoy the fact that at the trailer 1 phase, "FROM THE DIRECTOR OF BRAVEHEART". Fast forward about 2 weeks, "FROM DIRECTOR MEL GIBSON".

Hollywood was truly shunning this man..

Just got out and man, what a return for Mel. He hit this one out of the park. Say what you want about him, but the man can tell a story.

I've always hated on Garfield and was definitely worried about the accent going in, but it didn't bother me near as much as I thought it would and he did an incredible job of disappearing into the character. Pretty damn good performance, I thought.

Also, the battle scenes were top notch. You didn't want to miss even a split second of them.

Yeah, it could get a tad corny at a select few points throughout the film, which was likely unavoidable just based on the subject matter, but those points were very few.

9/10 for me. Encourage everyone to check it out.

Just got out. That was fantastic! Garfields accent didn't even take me out of the movie. Best war movie I've seen in a long time.
