but this entire Oregon ordeal was originally about an arson case
Nah, it wasn't, much more to it than that. But the Bundies and their ilk were the worst people to "represent" it.

US taking over whole states
Not exactly. After the US govt. Took over vast areas of the West from the original indigenous occupants (usually via bogus treaties) the land was offered to white settlers. The settlers took the best land and left the mountains, deserts, etc. in federal hands. BLM, USFS, etc. manage those lands under a multiple-use mandate. Those lands belong to all of us and ranchers, farmers, timber companies, etc. should pay us fair market value to use them for commercial purposes. The occupants were in the WRONG.

I haven't followed this. Were they really not guilty?
frick no. They were as guilty as one can be, but as someone stated earlier, this was a case of jury nullification.

Federal land managers are the worst neighbors a man could have.
BTW: They are talking native groups into signing over land into "trusts" for money. The tan man once again falls prey to the federal govt.

Yes, you're right that the arson case was the result of issues with the BLM. The Hammonds were let off with a light sentence, but the appeals court nullified that sentence and re-sentenced them to 5 years in prison to begin in January 2016. The Bundys caught wind and blew the whole thing up for their own gain.

BLM had been buying private land up and the Hammond Ranch was one which refused to sell. The FedGov used less than honorable tactics to attempt to gain the property.
The problem here, is that the Hammonds were probably guilty of the charges, but the FedGov can't be held to the same standard.

Is this what's called jury nullification? I'm not big on legalese but would this qualify?
