It is absolutely stupid to expand the terminals at a land locked airport. MSY has two run ways with no place to put any new ones.
Go tell that to London Heathrow

LHR just received approval to build a new runway, and if anyone thinks adding a runway at MSY is impossible then their opinion is suspect. Not that MSY really needs another runway anyway. SAN only has one runway that's shorter than MSY's longest and it still manages 20 million pax somehow. In the future things are only going to get more manageable. The 787 is a game changer for long haul flights.

My dad transferred from Lakefront Airport to the Moisant Stock Yards in 1961 and retired in 2002.
It has always been - and will always be - a vehicle for the repayment of political patronage.
Can any old time New Orleanians, from their own recollection, give me a one year period in their lifetime when one facet of the airport wasn't under major construction - terminal, runway, parking facilities, roadways, baggage claim, etc?

The airport is located in both Jefferson Parish and St. Charles Parish and is governed by the NOAB, which is a branch of the executive office of the City of New Orleans.
I want to see MSY thrive, and it is to an extent, but I feel it could be better without so much typical S. Louisiana "influence".

A major multi-modal transportation project in St James or other river parish between New Orleans & Baton Rouge, including a new airport serving both cities (passenger plus cargo), rail & interstate access and a deep water port has been proposed several times.
Not enough pockets were lined to make it a reality.

Yes, as well as building an airport in East New Orleans. I think the current location as about as good as you can get. One of the things that makes NOLA great is all you need is the 20 minute ride from the airport and you're in the heart of the city. Regardless of the reasons, I am glad it is staying where it is. Just need to streamline governance.
If it were in St. James or Ascension with a 50 minute drive to the CBD that wouldn't be good for anyone (not in STJ or AP).

I thought the that a mid point to BR airport may be a good idea in the past, but not so much now. First off MSY already gets 80% of flights in the state, and moving closer to BTR probably wouldn't make much of a difference. Also MSY is the major airport for the entire gulf coast region, not just southeast La. If you move it further west, you are also moving it further away from places like gulfport/biloxi, mobile, and even pensacola who also use MSY as their primary airport.

Katrina showed what folly that would have been.

Most major cities kept their older, smaller airports when the new, big one opened outside of town. I wouldn't suppose New Orleans or Baton Rouge would be any different.
The real jewel of this project wasn't passenger travel as much as freight. The potential combination of different modes of transportation inside the same gate would be unparalleled.

The Ports of New Orleans and Baton Rouge are two of the busiest waters ports in the US. I don't think there would be a significant shift to air freight due to the type of cargo that come through.
MSY is a popular leisure airport and should strive to be like LAS, or SAN.

You do realize how many airports are "land-locked" with 2 runways that have way more flights than MSY? Just to name a few: LHR, LGA, DCA, SEA, DXB, HKG all have 2 runways and handle 10X the flights MSY has.

The best part of NOLA airport by far is how the long term parking is always full and you have to go to the credit card lot where if the entry gate even works you get to pay $11 per day to park in an open lot about a mile away from the airport with no shuttle service.

That Civ 6 upgrade though.
I hope MSY can become as smooth as DFW is. I love flying out of that place.

San Diego International has 1 runway and it's smaller than the big one at KMSY and they have twice the amount of traffic and passengers going through.

Ha MSY has a long long way to go before it would need a 3rd runway*. As others have said Heathrow just this week got approval for a 3rd, and that is one of the top 5 busiest airports in the world.

Clearly you don't fly much.
3-4 times a month and I love our current airport.
I can park at US Park, they drop me right in front on the most eastern door, I go through TSA as TSA pre and am at my gate down the B concourse 10-15 minutes after I parked.
It is a VERY friendly layout for locals.
I MUCH prefer MSY to say BNA or SAN or MSP or MCI or LUV or MCO or either of the Chicago airports.
The question is for travelers just which airport is better???
(What other airport in the world can you get fried chicken livers like at Pralines on concourse B?)

USPark is right at the terminal and is MUCH better than using the airport to park. I rarely have to wait more than 2 or 3 minutes for a shuttle. They drop you off right in front of the door.

It doesn't matter how many gates you have as far as international flights go.
It matters how much demand you have for the international seat.
If you think MSY will involve into a major international airport you are very naive. We will never be the international hub we were in the seventies in eighties and even then it was almost all Central and South America.
I would not be surprised at all to see BA drop than London service within a year.
