Who plays?
I love the game, but it can be frustrating at times. I've won a few tournaments, but I've also been sent home wondering how I screwed up...or couldn't get luck...or lost to a moron.
I would be interested in learning about your experience. Mine is mixed.

You must have loved 2005.

One of my favorites, but only when everyone has to buy in for the same amount, opposed to a minimum buy-in but no max. I have played in a few of those poker rooms where you can buy in for whatever you want as long as it's over say 100 dollars. There's always some dick that buys in for like 1K and just bullies the table.

Such a great year for poker on tv. Televised stud and Omaha and 2-7 lowball tournaments.

Back around 2002-2004 there were cash games all over the apartments by LSU and houses all over off campus. Fun times.

Nope. I missed out. I was working hard and changing diapers for two kids. I don't regret it.
The poker rooms are hardly quiet now where I live (Denver area) What's your experience?

Was awesome.
Everyone was playing poker around campus.

I prefer Omaha for some reason.

This is why I love tournaments better, although I often play better with cash games.
I've won by fleecing some of the chip bullies, but I've also experienced breathtaking losses at the river.

I've tried Omaha in my freebie friendly poker league several times, and I struggle with it. It's exciting, but I've never been successful, which makes my motivation wane.

Placed 3rd out of 61 in the last one I played at lauberge in br. Played them a lot with my grandpa who passed away this may of lung cancer. I try to go as often as I can. Hold'em is a great combo of skill and luck. Knowing percentages but also being able to read the people around you to know if you're strong or able to bluff. I enjoy it

How come everyone that gets beat says they lost to some moron. Doesn't that make you the moron?

I am so sorry for your loss. It sounds like yiour grandpa passed on a hobby to you.
It sounds like our experiences are similar. I have had some tourney success, but the draw of a tremendously complex game is what brings me back.
3 out of 61 is awesome! Best wishes on continued success for you.

Yep. On occasion, I am the moron. I don't always read the table, the cards, or my opponent well enough.
Sometimes, it's just an idiot who defies the odds and falls into incredible luck.

I'd love to see the card protector when you have a chance.
Unfortunately, I live near Denver. My dad is still near NOLA, though, and he promised to play the next time that I visit. I will let you know. Sounds like fun.

Oh lord. Still though sounds nice. I've never played at Harrahs before. Might have to give it a shot.

Used to play all the time during the boom. Now, I play 1/yr at the Beau Rivage when we go on our group golf trip. Most years, I won enough to pay for the trip, but it's getting harder. I lost a few hundred this year. Was talking to a regular and he said the oil field being bad has made it a lot harder as all the guys who would go for the weekend and stumble out of coast after a few drinks are scarcer. He said when he first started playing, there were 5 sharks and 50 suckers every weekend. Now it's 50 sharks and 5 suckers.
I'm much better at cash games than tournaments. Knowing that I can't rebuy makes me play too tight and I get blinded to death. My best night ever was winning $5000 at the Bellagio in a 2/5 cash game.

Horseshoe in Shreveport 1/3 & 2/5 no limit sets the max buy in at 70% of the largest stack at the table. It really helps the game stay out of the situation you describe above.

I think this is part of the reason I have become bored with the game. I find tighter and tighter tables these days then years ago. More people actually know the game than they used to. Larger pots are harder to come by. Omaha is better and if you can get into a half and half game with a bunch of people who are really there to play omaha then the hold em hands are a lot more fun.
But I play much more black jack now and have such a better time than I do at poker.
ETA: Plus poker players in general are dicks. Smug as shite when it comes to the game. They cannot wait for the dealer or a player to screw up so they can drop some knowledge on the table. Most of the time its inaccurate. And they can't take losing. Beat them on a pot and its eye rolls, and low mumbling shite talking to the player next to them. "He played that?....did you see that? I had bla bla bla..... he fricking played that garbage to a raise.... fricking donkey" No how about you got outplayed/unlucky because the game is not about who gets dealt the best starting hand? Sorry, but you all know the types i'm talking about.
