Who is the better drummer: Lars Ulrich (Metallica) or Danny Carey (Tool)?

Whoever you choose, please provide a short explanation on why you believe that individual is better or more talented.
NOTE: You must choose one drummer from the two people mentioned in the thread title.
Any other name will simply be ignored.

I'd rather listen to someone explain why they wouldn't pick Danny

I'm patiently waiting for ANY explanation!!!

Have you listened to Lars? I don't think you have. He is good enough but gets a little off sometimes.....but he is Danish and they March to the beat of a different.....

Danny Carey. Lars doesn't have a creative bone in his body when it comes to drums.

why would you think I haven't listened to Lars? Strange thing to assume considering I started a Lars versus Danny thread which would imply that I'm a fan of both.
Why do you assume I haven't heard Lars? In fact, is there a person on this board who hasn't heard Metallica?
WTF?

80s Lars- insanely great
Danny Carey is amazing
Back in the 80's Lars was well known as one of the best drummers out there. For some reason when the internet was created, it became okay to dog on Lars drum skills. Listen to the entire And Justice for All album & tell me he sucks. You can't.
The material Metallica has put out since Justice is nothing like 80's Metallica when it come to drumming. They are 2 completely different bands.
Danny Carey is a drum legend. Period. Can't wait to see him in action Saturday night.

Lars has always been overrated

This. I grew up playing and hated Lars Ulrich. Mostly due to Napster, but also because he's just not the greatest drummer, but gets treated like he's special. He's fast, no doubt, but just very meh.

Meh - not compared to his contemporaries and not compared to Carey, even.
Problem with Lars is that he is just far, far too mediocre compared to the band's overall impact. He's not even a mediocre timekeeper - he's just barely competent. During his younger years, where I suspect they weren't hiding his flaws with production, he was able to play well enough to deliver some interesting things, but Lars, IMHO, held the band back because he was the weakest link.

Not at all. His drumming was fine was fine and worked with their music but was nothing extraordinary. Thrash places more importance on guitars. A better comparison for Lars would be Vinnie Paul of Pantera. His style worked fine but wasn't anything special.

Since folks are apparently debating this:
If Lars woke up with 1/16th the amount of talent Danny Carey has, he would die from utter shock

this isn't even close...

I'm a yuge Metallica guy, but Lars isn't really very good. In a live setting, he's terrible at keeping time. But I always liked him anyway because he has his own style, like his cymbal crashes on the two-beat.
