re: If choices came down to these two "Kelly or Herman" who would you want?

He wouldn't have to spend as much time because his recruiting grounds would be from FL to TX and he'd lock down the borders of LA.
He isn't stupid, and knows that. He knows the type of athletes that are in the south.
Fans may not like him and his NE witty attitude but he'd win and that in itself will win them over.
Worrying about personality when it comes to coaches strikes me as missing the point. Saban is famously difficult at a personal level. Harbaugh seems like a functional Asperger case. Meyer is about as likable as an unflushed terd.
But they win. That's what they are paid to do.

Oh, I'm with you. It doesn't bother me one bit. I like Chip. However, a lot of people in the fan base want someone they can relate to or be able to rub elbows with. Chip certainly isn't that guy but he wins.
It's one reason why O is as loved as he is even though one of his biggest jobs is to sell. and he has said a lot of the right things to gain support.

I don't know why being a nice guy is a prerequisite all of a sudden. Saban was and isn't a nice guy. Chip isn't a nice guy. Who cares? If he wins people will love him.

The issue I have with Kelly is that he has a really bad reputation regarding recruiting, that he doesn't like doing it and not great at it. I have no clue if that is the case but if it is true I don't think you can be that way and be successful in the SEC. Now how did he build the Ducks program to where it was prior to his departure, which he made a BCS bowl all 4 years he was HC and was 1 minute away from winning a NC. So those facts and not recruiting well as a HC don't jive in my opinion, but if it is true that won't work in the SEC.

Chip closed on a lot of good recruits. When Chip did an in-home, our success was great. So, he's not a bad recruiter. He just doesn't like prima donnas. He will flat out tell them he's gonna win without them regardless and see if they will change their tune. The good news is he will fill your team with guys that aren't me first.

Thanks for the info, good read!

If he wasn't very good at it he wouldn't have had the talent to fuel those explosive teams at Oregon. How much he enjoys it is up for some debate apparently but his results would lead me to believe that he gets the talent he needs.

Yep but you conveniently left out the rest of my post that stated the following;

I feel the same way, you don't have the success that Kelly had at Oregon if don't recruit well it is truly that simple. You don't make 4 BCS bowls in four years without recruiting to your scheme.

Chip Kelly is overrated. His offense only worked at Oregon when the Ducks outmatched the opposing defense's speed. Both games vs SEC defenses, Oregon's offense was mostly shut down because the defenses were able to matchup against Oregon's speed but a whole lot more physical.

But wouldnt he have more speed on offense in the SEC?

I agree with you but I go back to what Kelly said when LSU kicked their arse;
"they just have a different breed of athlete in the SEC"
So what could he do with the talent from the SEC?
Look I would rather have Herman than Kelly but I don't think Kelly would be that bad if it were to happen.

Wrong
At New Hampshire
quote:
Kelly was promoted to offensive coordinator at New Hampshire (1999–2006). The Wildcats' offenses averaged better than 400 yards per game of total offense in seven of his eight seasons[4] and more than 30 points per game in his final four seasons. In 2004, the school broke 29 offensive school records; compiling 5,446 yards of total offense and scoring 40 or more points in seven games. Their best offensive output was in 2005 when the Wildcats finished second nationally in total offense (493.5 ypg), third in scoring (41.7 ppg) and fifth in passing (300.1 ypg). They completed the season with an 11–2 record.
1st 2 seasons with the Eagles
2013- 2nd rated offense in NFL
2014- 5th rated Offense in NFL

It's not the speed that would be different because we had that in spades. It's the linemen that we can't get at Oregon. We have maybe three to five blue chip prospects out West in a cycle.

I don't know how you get MORE speed than he had at Oregon. You could make the argument that in the SEC he'd be able to recruit better O-Linemen. Still don't like his style of offense in the SEC though....too much running to the outside which doesn't work as well against defenses with speed to match.
Plus I think that kind of offense would hurt from recruiting standpoint....recruits with NFL dreams are drawn to playing in pro-style offense that can prepare them for the next level.

Didn't he regularly make USC his bitch? They have as much talent defensively as anyone.

He runs a lot of power between the tackles. I am not sure where you are getting this. The inside zone run is his staple.
