Any suggestions? I've tried a few different things with my son with no luck so far. I live nearby so it's close to the house and easy to bring my son there, but I think he will lose interest soon if I don't catch anything.

Spark Plugs, Buckets, and 32oz beers seem to be the secret out there.

Other than that I guess shrimp and or pogies would be best options

Some of the biggest fish I've ever hooked into was off the sea wall. My brother, God bless him, fishes out there religiously. He doesn't catch shite. I've been telling him for years if he wants to catch he needs to drive to terrebone or Lafourche. Low and behold he calls me before the missou game and tells me he just lost a big red right by the steps because he didn't have a net. I felt terrible for the guy. He now brings a net and 48 quart with him on every trip.

usually soaking some fresh or frozen mullet on the bottom with a fish finder rig can bring drum...jacks...catfish...sharks...
since you live close..
set out a couple of rods...listen to a football game sitting in lawn chairs at sunset...
don't stay long if they're not biting so you don't bore the son...

I passed some time there regularly a few years ago. Never had much luck. One day, I got into a school of drum, fishing fresh shrimp on a rig (forget the name. sinker, then hooks about 6" and 12" up from there, so the bait is off the bottom). Caught 7 of them (there were two of us). Another time, I caught a 10" speck on a gulp, casting and retrieving just inside the London Ave canal. Was pretty random both times. Some supposedly catch sheephead at the base of the steps.
