usually the buyout agreements have a requirement that the fired coach seek out market value options to offset the buyout amount. so if miles did go after another head coaching job, he couldn't lowball it to screw LSU. i think even media jobs have the same sort of requirement/offset language

Agreed. But in every situation there's a range of prices/salaries that would be "market", not just one number. And that range at Penn State isn't the same as the range at Alabama or Univ. of Maine. So, my only points are (i) he doesn't have to hit the top or even the middle of the range if he's happy to fill in the difference with the net LSU payout, and (ii) he's not under an obligation to take a job he really doesn't want (or he hinks isn't a good fit) even if it might pay more than the one he does want.
